Waiting for Churchill

Today is May 10th. Churchill wasn’t born that day. He didn’t die that day. He didn’t even made one of his great speeches that day. But on that day he changed the course of history.
On May 10th 1940, Nazi Germany, led by the infamous Hitler, invaded the Netherlands. World War II started over eight months before that day, but this part of the war wasn’t named “Bore War” for nothing – Britain under the fragile leadership of Neville Chamberlain‏ declared war against Germany, but in fact did everything in its power to avoid major scale escalation with Germany, just like it did before the war with the humiliating “Munich Agreements”.
Mere hours after the invasion, Chamberlain resigned. Churchill was called to change history, and clear it from the dreadful ideas of the Nazism.

Today, almost 70 years later we know that Chamberlain’s “Appeasement” was a nearly-fatal mistake. But did we learn the lesson? Iran is heading full steam ahead towards nuclear arsenal. And what does the world do? Nothing. All of the world leaders prefer to sit this fight out. They all prefer the comfort of this fraudulent peace. I only wish these leaders remembered Churchill’s remark to Chamberlain "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor and you will have war."

We are all waiting for a new Churchill. Let’s just hope he’ll show up soon enough.

And as for us on the IDF, we need no one to tell us that “I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat“. We know that already. That’s our day-by-day routine.

And if that frustrating history lesson wasn’t enough on its own, I missed “Depeche Mode”s show! Some of my friends were lucky enough to go there. The worst thing about this is that I could have had tickets using a “COMBINA” from my uncle…

YES, Churchill was the man of the 'hour'. But I have noticed that we have appeasers and apologists, today, as we did then. jt

Two great posts in two days, Yoav. I'm going to subscribe to your blog via email and hope that you continue to write whenever you get the chance.

Let us not forget also the 'Iron Curtain' speech that Churchill gave in March 1946:

"From Stettin in the Baltic to Trieste in the Adriatic, an Iron Curtain has descended across the continent."

Today it's an Iron Crescent descending across Europe.

Hello Yoav, you know me from Facebook. Diane.

I admire you for what you are doing here. Yes I know you most likely get 'debriefed' in certain situations and you can let off steam with your fellow soldiers. But speaking from personal experience I also know it is very therapeutic to write down our thoughts and feeling. It is a somewhat different experience and interpretation on our psyche. I look forward to reading through the rest of your articles, I just wanted to say hello and to let you know I was saddened when I read SKEPTICISM. That person on facebook...well try to ignore hateful people like her. From her language I suspect she is some wannabe gangster moll. We have a few here in Australia as well...they make me laugh at times...other times I actually feel sorry for people who have such hate in their hearts.

I am trying to learn as much as I can about Israel, Palestine, Gaza and the West Bank. I am ...admittedly...very confused about the whole situation. Sometimes I don't know whether the soldiers in Palestine are good guys or not...are they on your side or are they who you are fighting? I know Hamas and hezbollah are the terrorists in Palestine, and the ordinary citizens are caught in the middle...sort of like caught between a rock and a hard place. I have a net friend who has tried explaining the situation over there to me, but for goodness sakes, it is still confusing to me. I have, for many years, wanted to go to Israel and Jerusalem to tour around 'the Holy Places'...who knows, one day I might get the chance....

Well Yoav, you keep up your writing, and stay safe. I will have you and your fellow soldiers in my prayers, the same as I do with our soldiers fighting the terrorists, and in fact all other troops from USA etc fighting these bastards.
I am sort of against the war...but I do support any and all troops. I believe any troops in Pakistan and Afghanistan should all be sent home to protect their own countries... I especially believe Pak. is a lost cause now.

bye for now....

best regards..Di J. (Christian Nanna)

I just found your blog and I wanted to say that it is very well written. You have a way with words.

I'm just back from Israel (I was there on holiday). And I think what you and the IDF is doing is very imporant.

I have friends, and the children of friends of my parents are now in the IDF, so I find your blog very interesting. (I know their experiences will differ but reading what you are going through and your thoughts on what is happening to/around you is, well like i said, interesting.)

So, anyway, what this post is saying in a roundabout way is that I (and my family) support you and IDF.

So many Hitlers! Hitler, Haj Amin, Nasser, Saddam, Arafat, Ahmadinejad. Did I miss any? My God, Yoav, the tyranny of choice. Thank God we've got Churchillians like you. Rollover Lieberman, Yoav for Israeli PM NOW!

Shalom Yoav :-)

Another great read, and yes, the World sits silently while Iran continues to push for nuclear arsenal, this leaves the question: "who will take out this threat?" because if the World continues to sit back and play the "guessing game", will they? won't they? get full nukes in operation pretty soon? Israel would be targetted, we all know what Ahmadinejad thinks. A tyrant in control of nuclear weapons is insane.

You keep strong my friend and keep Israel safe, G-d bless :-)
Gini.
